CGFNS® Certification

The Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS®) Certification is a prerequisite for International nursing graduates who wish to practice in the United States. About 85% of the States in the United States of America require International nurses to pass the CGFNS® exam in order to receive permission to take NCLEX-RN® Registered Nurse licensure examination. A CGFNS® Certificate is needed for an immigrant occupational-preference visa and admission to take the NCLEX-RN® licensing exam. Known exceptions are New York, California and Florida. However, these states have an over abundance of foreign nurses, since they don't require the CGFNS® exam. This makes it extremely difficult to secure a RN position in these states. International nurses are encouraged to pass the CGFNS® exam since, passing the CGFNS® exam provides you with the option of practicing as a RN in all 50 states of the United States.

The Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools governs procedures for foreign educated nurses seeking employment in the United States  A Certification Program which includes an examination of nursing proficiency and English language proficiency, as well as a Credentials Evaluation Service are provided by this organization to help ensure that the foreign educated nurses meet U.S. Boards of Nursing registration/licensing requirements. The CGFNS® Certification Program is designed specifically for first-level general (Registered) nurses educated outside the United States who are eligible to practice as registered nurses in the United States. The program is comprised of three parts: The CGFNS® Qualifying Exam that tests nursing knowledge, an English language proficiency examination and credentials review of your nursing education The CGFNS® Qualifying Exam is offered three times a year in over 50 test sites worldwide. It also satisfies one of the immigration requirements for securing an occupational visa to work in the United States. CGFNS® Certification Program Certificate holders consistently have a higher rate of success on the NCLEX-RN® examination than internationally educated nurses who do not hold the Certification.

Vipra Med offers web based online practice exams and learning for the CGFNS® exams. The CGFNS® examination uses items with a variety of response formats, such as, single response multiple-choice, multiple response, fill-in-the-blank, and a variety of display formats, such as, charts and exhibit displays, tables, and graphic images.  All items are developed and validated using the expertise of practicing nurses, educators and regulators from throughout the country. The CGFNS® examination content is revised based on a practice analysis conducted every three years.  The majority of test items are written at the application or higher levels of cognition but the exam may include items at all of the cognitive levels.  Most of the questions of the CGFNS® exam are worded multiple choice questions. In recent years, however, the Boards of Nursing have added broader questions that don't involve choices. For example, some questions require identifying and selecting a particular area of a drawn body part pertaining to the question Involve selecting multiple correct answers via check box.
