NCLEX-RN Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I take the Test?
You can attempt the NCLEX exam at any one of the Pearson Vue Test Centers, which are located in every State throughout the U.S. and worldwide. Each testing center has terminals available for candidates. A proctor will help you get started, administer and monitor security during the test.

When can I take the Test?
The exam is offered every day, Monday through Saturday, throughout the year. Make sure you are thoroughly prepared for the exam before you register an exam date. We recommend you begin studying as soon as possible, after you have decided to take the exam. Under no circumstances should you delay until you have your ATT. The Vipra Med Qbank with sample questions will give you an idea of what to expect.

What is a Computerized Adaptive Test?
In the Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) method, Intelligent testing software selects the questions for you to answer. Most of the questions in the exam are multiple choice that can be viewed one at a time, but you will not be given the choice to go back to previous questions once you have submitted your answers. Items cannot be left unanswered. The CAT chooses test items based on your responses. The computer will adapt to your answers by selecting harder or easier questions for the next item. At the start of the exam, you will be provided with sample questions. After that, the test begins and an item of low or medium difficulty level may appear. Based on your reply, the CAT might give you an easier or tougher question. The CAT software estimates your capabilities based on your replies. After the scoring algorithm of the CAT software determines with 95% probability that you have achieved a minimum threshold score required to pass, it will pass you. The sample questions in our Review will let you practice the CAT format of testing.

How many questions are there in the Test?
The NCSBN test bank contains thousands of questions that have been assigned a level of difficulty as well as mapped to the NCLEX test plan. During the exam you will be asked a minimum of 75 questions or a maximum of 265. This could range between one hour and six hours. Each question has been assigned a level of difficulty. The greater the difficulty level, the higher the assigned score. The Vipra Med Review Qbank has over 3000 sample questions that will give you over 20 unique full length exams for practice.

How long is the Test?
The NCLEX-RN has a maximum time limit of six hours, while the NCLEX-PN has a maximum time limit of five hours. This includes the computer tutorial and breaks.

How do I answer the Test questions?
The CAT software begins with instructions on how to use the computer. You will also receive 15 questions in a practice quiz with sample items after that. The main NCLEX exam begins soon after that. Most of the items are Multiple-choice and Multiple answer. However you will also be presented with Hotspot and Ordered value items. You will need to analyze each option and then select the best choice among the answers provided. The CAT Software will not let you skip an item or go back. The CAT software utilizes a negative scoring mechanism. This means if you get an answer wrong you will receive a negative score. It is therefore very important to look at each item carefully and provide the best possible answer with intelligent elimination. The sample questions in the Review will let you practice this technique.

How do I get my Test results?
The Pearson Vue Test Center will transmit your results electronically to your State Board of Nursing. You will be informed of your official results via mail approximately one month after appearing for the examination. If your fail, you can retake the exam after 45 to 90 days as determined by your State Board of Nursing. Some State Boards participate in a Quick Results program and let candidates access their unofficial scores, 48 hours after taking their examination. Please note that the Quick Results do not authorize you to practice as a licensed nurse. The Quick Results can be obtained from the Pearson Vue website with a payment of $7.95.

If I fail, How long do would I need to wait before retaking the NCLEX-RN?
Most States let you retake the NCLEX-RN exam is 45 days. However, Georgia and Washington State have a 90 day wait before you are allowed to retake the NCLEX-RN. You will also need to register a new test schedule with Pearson Vue.

What is the biggest difference between the NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN?
The main difference between the RN and PN program is the number and level of difficulty of test items. The NCLEX-RN has 265 items and the minimum number you need to answer is 75. The NCLEX-PN has 205 items and the minimum number you need to answer is 85. Both tests require an understanding of nursing practice and cover several categories of client needs. The Vipra Med NCLEX sample questions for RN and PN will let you compare the difficulty level between the two.
